Catalytically Active Polyol - The Future of Automotive Seating

July 17, 2002 – In a development that will have a long-term impact on automotive materials, Renosol Corporation now offers seating products made with VORANOL VORACTIV* polyols from The Dow Chemical Company. Renosol is the first company to offer the Dow chemistry in their product line in North America; this foam will be an additional option to their current seating foam. Both companies believe the new product is just the beginning of what is yet to come in groundbreaking products for the automotive industry.

“For us, the decision to begin offering the VORANOL VORACTIV product was a look towards the future of automotive seating and the opportunity to participate in an industry-changing innovation,” says Doug Peck, CEO of Renosol. “Dow has enabled us to offer our customers a product that maintains all the performance attributes that our customers demand from our seating foam, but with significantly reduced amine emissions from the polyurethane foam.”

VORANOL VORACTIV allows Renosol to greatly reduce staining-, fogging-, and odor-causing agents from polyurethane foams. Amine emissions are believed to contribute to windshield fogging and to cause the discoloration of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) parts and degradation of polycarbonate components in automobile interiors. Renosol will offer the new technology for molded polyurethane seating and interior trim products for the automotive industry, including seat cushions and backs, and armrest, headrest and console cushions.

“By partnering with Renosol, we will be able to bring the benefits of this industry-changing innovation to automotive OEMS and through them to the end-user,” says Steven English, business development director, Dow Polyurethanes. “We’re very happy that Renosol has chosen to use the VORANOL VORACTIV polyol line.”

“I think we’ve definitely made an important decision that will benefit our customers,” says Peck. “Dow’s polyol product is the only commercialized product on the market that offers reduced amine catalyst emissions and at the same time maintains the specifications required by our customers. We feel our customers will benefit from both Dow’s experience in polyol chemistry and Renosol’s experience in polyurethane molding.”

When Dow introduced its new line of catalytically active polyols at the Polyurethanes Expo in October of 2001, they anticipated a great deal of enthusiasm from the industry leaders in innovation like Renosol. VORANOL VORACTIV polyols gives Renosol customers significant advantages by reducing fogging, staining and odors from amine emissions, without sacrificing product performance.

VORANOL VORACTIV polyols are manufactured using a proprietary Dow process that grafts the catalytic activity into the polyol, saving customers a formulating step.

Since the 1950s, Renosol Corporation has custom engineered and manufactured polyurethane systems, molded polyurethane seating and interior trim products for the automotive industry, material handling systems and rotationally molded polyethylene products. Renosol continues expanding its technological base to provide customers with innovative solutions.

Dow’s polyurethanes business, a leading supplier of polyurethane raw materials, offers one of the broadest lines of polyurethane products in the industry. Dow’s raw materials are used in rigid foams, flexible foams, adhesives, sealants, coatings, elastomers and agrifibers, as well as many other applications. Applications for these products cover a wide range of end uses, including cushioning for furniture and bedding, carpet backing, automotive seating, instrument panels and steering wheels, office furniture, flooring, and insulation for appliances, sheathing and roofing.

Dow is a leading science and technology company that provides innovative chemical, plastic and agricultural products and services to many essential consumer markets. With annual sales of $30 billion, Dow serves customers in more than 170 countries and a wide range of markets that are vital to human progress, including food, transportation, health and medicine, personal and home care, and building and construction, among others. Committed to the principles of sustainable development, Dow and its 50,000 employees seek to balance economic, environmental and social responsibilities.
